Visits from Spirit - Shadow Figures

Seeing human shadows walking in a house is often viewed as a manifestation of displaced energy, a message from the spirit realm, or a reflection of own unintegrated subconscious mind (the "Shadow self"). Rather than being malevolent, these sightings are generally interpreted as calls for attention, energetic clearing, or deep inner work. Shamanic traditions approach these sightings through a few distinct lenses, depending on the nature and behaviour of the shadows:

1. Your Personal Shadow Self. The "shadow" represents the hidden, repressed, or unacknowledged parts of your personality. If these shadows are in your house, it may mean your subconscious is nudging you to confront hidden fears, suppressed emotions, or past traumas that need illumination and healing.

2. Displaced Energy or "Stuck" Spirits. Shamans recognize that non-ordinary realms overlap with our own. Shadows are often seen as "shades" or earthbound spirits—energy signatures left behind or trapped in liminal spaces like hallways, doorways, or rooms where heavy emotional events have taken place. In Shamanic practice, these are sometimes considered to be parts of a soul that are lost, confused, or seeking passage into the light.

3. Spirit Guides or Messengers. Not all shadows are negative or frightening; some Shamans believe that shadow figures can be benign spirit guides or neutral observers functioning just beyond our normal range of vision. If you are engaged in deep spiritual practices or meditation, your energetic perception heightens, which can make you temporarily aware of these hidden energetic layers.

To address these sightings safely and constructively, create a boundary around your home using smoke cleansing (such as sage, cedar, or sweetgrass), or visualize a sphere of protective, impenetrable light encompassing your home. Spend time journaling or meditating on what emotions arise when you see the shadows. Ask yourself what parts of my authentic self I might be hiding or repressing. If the activity is disruptive or brings a sense of unease, Shamans can perform a space clearing to help lost energies transition. You can communicate if you feel safe enough and speak clearly "I see you. Do you have a message for me, or do you need help passing through?" Set ground rules and state your boundaries. For example: "You may communicate with me only if you come in peace and for my highest good." Listen with your body, as spirits rarely speak in audible words, they usually communicate through clairsentience (sudden emotional drops or spikes), clairvoyance (images popping into your mind's eye), or dreams right after the encounter.

When you begin interacting with the unseen, you must maintain absolute energetic sovereignty over your home by lighting a candle, as fire is a natural filter for heavy energy and acts as a focal point for clear communication. Ring a bell, use a rattle, or clap your hands in the corners of the room after the interaction, as this breaks up any lingering, heavy thought-forms or stagnant energy. Close the door when you have finished, such as, "our communication is over for now. You must leave this space or rest in peace."

In Shamanism, when a human shadow appears immediately after a death, especially when coupled with a sudden flowering of a rose bush, it is a beautiful, clear indicator of ancestral or land spirit connection, rather than anything malevolent. Plants are deep energetic communicators and a rose bush flowering is a classic Shamanic sign of a spirit acknowledging a bond, offering a final blessing, and showing that their life force transitioned into the natural world around your home. This human shadow is very likely the energetic imprint and the spirit may have stepped into the role of a local ancestor or guardian spirit watching over the home. A lingering presence is common, especially with older people who have spent decades living in one spot, as they remain attached to the familiar comfort of the neighbourhood.

When you communicate with this spirit approach with love, compassion and honouring the memory, while still establishing necessary boundaries for your home. Perhaps stand by the rose bush and call the spirit by name. Or go into the room where the shadow is most frequent and say: "I know this is you, and name the spirit. Thank you for the love you and thank you for the sign of the roses and then give the spirit permission to leave, say go with love, but please leave this space to the living now." Then light a white candle in the room where the shadow walks. Say a prayer or express gratitude for the presence and burn herbs such as, Rosemary, Lavender or spray Rose-water. Gently mist or smoke the area, visualizing the shadow dissolving into a light of peaceful mist.
